Former Methode Electronics Executive Files Lawsuit Alleging Defamation, Wrongful Interference, and Emotional Distress

Sep 26, 2024

Bassim Matta, a former executive at Methode Electronics, Inc., has filed a lawsuit against the company in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, alleging wrongful interference with his employment prospects, defamation, assault, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Matta, who served as head of Methode’s Egyptian production facility from 2012 until his resignation in early 2023, claims that actions taken by senior management contributed to his decision to resign.

In the lawsuit, Matta states that he played a significant role in expanding Methode’s operations in Egypt and internationally. Under his leadership, the Egyptian facility grew from one unit to five, employing over 1,000 people. Despite his years of service and positive evaluations, Matta alleges that his association with Methode’s former Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Joseph El Khoury, led to him being targeted amidst internal disagreements within the company’s leadership.

The lawsuit further claims that in February 2023, Methode executives, along with U.S.-based attorneys from a law firm in Chicago, entered the company’s offices in Egypt accompanied by security personnel. According to Matta, he was detained in his office without clear legal justification. The lawsuit alleges that this situation created an intimidating environment, with Matta feeling threatened by the presence of an armed individual. During this time, Matta claims he was subjected to questioning under coercive circumstances, with the suggestion that the interrogation was connected to U.S. government authorities.

Matta’s complaint also asserts that the investigation was part of an effort by Methode’s leadership to damage his reputation and force his resignation. He claims the company made false accusations of misconduct, which he believes severely harmed his professional standing. Matta states that this led to his resignation, which he considers to be a constructive dismissal. The lawsuit also outlines the emotional and physical distress Matta experienced, claiming it affected his health and personal life.

In his legal filing, Matta is seeking compensation for the harm to his career, reputation, and well-being. The lawsuit requests damages for economic loss, emotional distress, and reputational harm, as well as punitive damages.

This case raises concerns about alleged misconduct within Methode Electronics and the broader implications for corporate governance and employee treatment.
